What AI SDK 7 changes for developers building production agents
Vercel released AI SDK 7 on June 25. A closer look at long-running work, upgrade requirements and the behaviour teams should test before migrating.

Vercel released AI SDK 7 on June 25, 2026. For TypeScript developers, the update raises a practical question beyond the quality of a model’s answer: how should an application manage an agent that carries out work across several stages? This report examines the changes available by June 27.
Keeping control of the work
The release introduces agent-level tool approval policies and WorkflowAgent for long-running tasks. Execution state can persist between steps, supporting continuation after interruptions or application deployments.
Consider an agent that proposes a data change and waits for a person to approve it. The application needs to know what was proposed and where execution should resume. Selecting a capable model does not, by itself, provide that organisation. Producing a suggestion and carrying out a traceable operation are separate engineering tasks.
Preparing an existing application
AI SDK 7 requires Node.js 22 or later and ESM imports. Projects using CommonJS require need to review how they load packages. Checking the developer’s laptop is only part of this work: test and deployment environments must also meet the requirements.
The migration guide describes a further change in result handling. Some top-level result properties now aggregate all steps, while finalStep provides the last step’s output. Applications that display or store tool results should review that distinction.
For example, an interface expecting one completed action may not intend to display a list covering every action. A successful build will not establish whether that presentation is correct. The relevant test follows the result through to the user.
A useful migration exercise
A small team can start with one bounded task: receive a request, call a tool and inspect the result. Then interrupt the task and test continuation, checking whether completed actions repeat and whether the final output remains clear.
The WorkflowAgent migration guide also separates stored ModelMessage data from rendering a conversation. Chat applications should therefore exercise saving and reopening messages alongside launching an agent.
A useful upgrade decision starts with an existing application problem. If work stalls while awaiting approval, resumption deserves focused testing. If the application processes several stages, result storage and presentation deserve particular attention. That gives a team concrete evidence about whether the migration improves the work its users actually need to complete.
