US imposes 25% tariff on Nvidia H200 chips headed to China
Trump signed a proclamation taxing advanced AI chips that pass through the US on their way abroad. AMD's MI325X is also covered.

On January 14, US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing a 25% tariff on advanced AI chips made outside the US that pass through the country before being exported elsewhere, including to China.
Which chips
- Nvidia H200
- AMD MI325X
The proclamation formalises the Commerce Department's December decision to let Nvidia sell H200 chips to vetted Chinese customers.
Who is exempt
Chips imported into the US and used there for research, defence or commercial purposes are not taxed.
Reactions
Nvidia said the move "strikes a thoughtful balance that is great for America". According to Nikkei Asia, China is drafting its own rules for H200 purchases.
The proclamation says the US fully manufactures only about 10% of the chips it needs.
