Sony announced three new speakers on September 1: ULT TOWER MAX, ULT TOWER 7 and ULT TOWER 5. They target music, parties and karaoke. In this category, however, “portable” needs to be read alongside dimensions and weight. It does not automatically mean something small enough to put in a bag.

How large is ULT TOWER 5?

Sony Support lists the following specifications for SRS-ULT500, the model known as ULT TOWER 5:

Feature Sony specification
Weight Approximately 12.7 kg
Width × height × depth Approximately 358 × 534 × 280 mm
Speaker units One woofer and two tweeters
Bluetooth 5.3
Custom EQ 10 bands

Its product page describes up to 20 hours of battery life and IPX4 water resistance. Runtime depends on the company's test conditions. The launch announcement specifies that IPX4 applies with the unit upright and the port cover properly closed.

What kind of portability do you need?

In our assessment, choosing a speaker should start with defining the intended movement. Taking a device from a room into a garden is different from carrying it on foot over a long distance. The stated weight helps make that distinction more concrete than a product photograph alone.

Even for use at home, consider the storage location and the route used to move the device in and out. A speaker may look suitable in a marketing image, while the practical question is where it will actually be used and who will move and set it up.

A short requirements list can make the comparison more useful. Will it normally remain in one place? Does it need to move between several locations? Is there room to leave it ready for use? These are suitability questions, not findings about the handling of a product we have tested.

Assessing sound

If an opportunity to listen is available, our suggestion is to use familiar music and pay attention to clarity at a level suited to everyday use. Greater loudness on its own does not identify the best choice for every room or occasion. What attracts attention during a short demonstration may not be the most important requirement for repeated use.

This is a report on the launch and manufacturer specifications. We have not tested these models or produced independent measurements of their sound quality. The practical distinction is between the device's design and the listener's requirements: treating every party speaker as interchangeable can obscure meaningful differences in size and intended handling.
