Oshen's tiny ocean robots are the first to collect data inside a Category 5 hurricane
Three robots from British startup Oshen rode out Hurricane Humberto and sent data to NOAA throughout.

Startup Oshen builds small autonomous ocean robots called C-Stars. They have become the first ocean robots to collect data inside a Category 5 hurricane.
What happened
- The US weather agency NOAA received 15 robots
- 5 were deployed ahead of Hurricane Humberto near the US Virgin Islands
- 3 rode out the entire storm, "minus a few missing parts", collecting data throughout
What is a C-Star?
- Small, autonomous micro-robots
- Can survive at sea for 100 days straight
Who's behind it
Oshen was founded in April 2022 by Anahita Laverack and Ciaran Dowds and is now based in Plymouth, England. The UK government is also a customer for weather and defence work.
Data from inside storms helps improve future hurricane forecasts.
