OpenAI removes GPT-4o from ChatGPT
From Friday, February 13, GPT-4o and four other legacy models are no longer available in ChatGPT.

What changed?
OpenAI said that from February 13, 2026, five legacy models are no longer available in ChatGPT:
- GPT-4o
- GPT-5
- GPT-4.1
- GPT-4.1 mini
- o4-mini
Why GPT-4o was controversial
GPT-4o was one of OpenAI's best-known models, but it drew heavy criticism. On the Spiral-Bench benchmark it remained OpenAI's highest-scoring model for sycophancy, meaning it tended to agree with users and validate their ideas too easily.
The model has been linked to several lawsuits over user self-harm and what some call "AI psychosis."
How many people still used it?
OpenAI says only 0.1% of its customers still used GPT-4o. With 800 million weekly users, TechCrunch estimates that is around 800,000 people.
Second attempt
OpenAI first planned to retire GPT-4o in August 2025 alongside GPT-5, but kept it for paid subscribers after user backlash. Thousands of users protested again this time, but OpenAI stuck with its decision.
