Microsoft 365 outage takes down Outlook, Teams and OneDrive for many users
Microsoft said part of its North American infrastructure was not processing traffic as expected, cutting access to email, files and meetings.

On January 22, Microsoft 365 suffered a major outage, and many users could not access their email and files.
What stopped working?
- Exchange Online (Outlook email)
- File search in SharePoint and OneDrive
- Teams chats and meetings
- Admins also lost access to Purview, Defender XDR and the admin centers
What Microsoft said
Microsoft said on X that the problem came from "a portion of service infrastructure in North America that is not processing traffic as expected", adding that it was "working to restore the infrastructure to a healthy state".
The lesson
The outage shows how many companies rely entirely on a single cloud. It's a good idea to keep a local copy of important files.
