Pixel’s August update addresses VPU issue with security patch level 2026-08-05
Google’s August 4 Pixel bulletin lists CVE-2026-0163 in the Video Processing Unit. Its publication date, patch-level date and arrival on a particular phone describe different stages.

Google published its August Pixel security bulletin on August 4, 2026. The table lists CVE-2026-0163 in the Video Processing Unit as an Elevation of Privilege issue with High severity.
For Google devices, the bulletin identifies security patch level 2026-08-05 or later as addressing its issues and those in the month’s Android bulletin.
Three dates with different purposes
A user may encounter the bulletin’s publication date, the security patch-level date and the day an update reaches their phone. Each has a different purpose.
The first identifies when technical information was published. The second describes the level of security corrections in a build. The third concerns availability for the particular device.
Seeing 2026-08-05 in a bulletin published on August 4 therefore does not create a contradiction. In this context, the date identifies a patch level.
Separating these meanings makes it easier to read news and device information without expecting every date to match.
Pixel and Android bulletins
The general Android bulletin was published on August 3. The Pixel bulletin adds information specific to Google devices. Reading an issue’s identifier, affected component and classification together provides a clearer description.
EoP is the abbreviation for Elevation of Privilege. It identifies the type of issue in the table alongside the stated severity.
In an illustrative support record, a team could document the device model, system version and patch level together. That connects the technical bulletin with the build actually running on the phone.
Recording the state after an update also allows a more precise comparison than simply saying that the August update arrived.
Updates arrive gradually
Google’s guidance explains that Pixel updates roll out gradually and can vary by device and carrier. Update status is available through Settings, System and Software update.
For an organized evaluation, a user can compare version information before and after updating, then check familiar daily tasks. The observation is then tied to a specific device and build.
If an operational problem appears, describing the steps, expected result and actual behavior alongside that version information makes it easier to understand.
The update’s significance lies in delivering security corrections to the phone. Reading the patch level together with device information provides a clearer picture than the month’s name alone, while preserving the distinction between publishing information and reaching every individual device.
