Google Images at 25: a new home and image generation in Search
Google’s July 14 announcement introduces a visual-browsing experience and image generation in AI Overviews, with different rollout scopes.

Google marked 25 years of Google Images on July 14, 2026, announcing a new visual-browsing home and image generation in AI Overviews. The changes bring finding and creating images closer together in Search, while serving different purposes.
A space for exploring ideas
The new experience presents an image gallery and organises a return to saved collections. Its initial rollout is on desktop in the United States, in English, over the weeks following the announcement.
For a designer, that could help organise directions for colour, lighting, product presentation or a physical space. Giving each collection a clear question makes saving material useful for a decision rather than simply accumulating images.
For example, lighting references can be separated from furniture-layout references even when both appear in the same picture. That is an approach to organising research, rather than an additional feature attributed to the new interface.
Finding and generating are different tasks
Image generation in AI Overviews uses Nano Banana. The initial rollout is in English in regions that already support image creation in AI Mode.
Someone seeking a photograph of a conference needs a record of an event. Someone developing a studio concept may need an illustration of something not yet built. Both outputs are images, but they are evaluated differently.
For a creator, identifying the purpose before searching helps determine the source required: is the picture showing something that happened, or explaining a proposed idea? The answer also shapes what a reader needs to understand about it.
The context still matters
Google introduced About this image in 2023, providing information about an image’s appearance and its use on other pages. Search guidance explains that this context can help establish an image’s approximate age and how it is being used.
For example, finding an older page using a picture attached to a new story may clarify that it represents a general topic or an earlier event. That capability predates July’s announcement.
The distinction gives the update practical context. Browsing tools help find material, contextual tools help interpret it, and generation serves a separate creative purpose.
The new features make exploration and concept creation more accessible within Search. For publishers, useful work still connects an image’s purpose, source and context so that readers understand what they are seeing and why it appears in the story.
