Cloudflare launches Adaptive Intelligence to raise the cost of bot attacks
The engine is built into Bot Management and aims to make defenses adapt faster. Website operators also need to assess the impact on legitimate visitors.

Cloudflare introduced Adaptive Intelligence on August 31, a bot-detection engine built into Bot Management. The company says it learns from live traffic and generates short-lived rules so defenses can change as attackers change their techniques. Its stated goal is to make sustained attacks slower and more expensive to operate.
What changing defenses means
In its technical explanation, Cloudflare describes assessing multiple signals rather than relying only on fixed logic. It says some detection signals can be used without immediately showing an attacker a visible reaction. This is the company's account of its design, rather than a finding from an independent test we conducted.
For readers, it is useful to distinguish introducing a security tool from establishing its effect on a particular website. A service operator first needs to define the problem it wants to reduce. Without that definition, an active dashboard can still leave the practical value of a change unanswered.
Do not read the block count alone
In our assessment, an online shop needs two outcomes together: reducing abuse and keeping the path open for a legitimate customer. If someone can reach the basket but is mistakenly stopped during payment, an increased total of blocked requests will not explain the experience on its own.
As an evaluation example, a team could identify registration, sign-in and completed purchases as important workflows. It could then read the defense outcome alongside successful completion of those tasks. That is a proposed assessment method, not a test we ran against Cloudflare or measurements from a particular shop.
It also helps to choose a comparison period and define an acceptable outcome before introducing a change. That discourages treating every movement in activity as an automatic success, especially when visitor numbers or commercial promotions change at the same time.
Questions before enabling a change
The team should know who can review a mistaken block, what information that review requires, and how to reverse a change if it disrupts necessary work. These questions clarify responsibility rather than leaving it suspended between developers, customer support and the security vendor.
A team can also define the situations requiring urgent review, such as a broken critical workflow, and retain a clear description of the change it made. Those are organizational practices we suggest to make evaluation and response easier.
Adaptive Intelligence presents an adaptive approach to bot defense. Its practical value for an operator still depends on solving a defined problem while preserving a usable service. The presence of AI in a product description cannot stand in for that evidence. A useful deployment decision connects the security result to the work the website must continue to support.
