What ChatGPT Work changes about longer tasks across apps and files
OpenAI announced the experience July 9. A July 12 report examines the move from a written answer toward a completed work product.

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Work on July 9, 2026, positioning it as an agent for longer tasks across files and connected applications. It can produce materials such as documents, spreadsheets and presentations. This July 12 report examines the direction of the announcement and its potential role in everyday work.
From a request to an outcome
The release notes describe following progress, answering questions and changing direction during a task. They also identify Scheduled Tasks for scheduled and recurring work.
That describes an experience in which the user’s contribution does not end with one initial message. A project may involve several stages and require a decision or additional information along the way. Following execution becomes part of the collaboration.
Consider a team with several files that needs a report for a meeting. “Create a report” provides a starting point, but identifying the time period, audience and question to resolve makes the desired result clearer.
The requirement may also change when a draft reveals missing information. Adjusting direction matters because a team will not necessarily know every detail before work begins.
Defining completion
A useful evaluation can start with a task the user already understands. That makes it easier to identify the relevant information, check figures and judge the appropriate format.
In the report example, the existence of a file does not by itself establish completion. The document needs to answer the meeting’s question, make its sources clear and let the reader find the important points. Those are evaluation criteria, not performance results from a test we conducted.
It also helps to identify what happens after delivery: presenting the report, updating it later or using it as the basis for another task. Understanding that next step connects the review to the actual need.
A phased rollout
The July 9 announcement specifies a web and mobile rollout beginning with Pro, Enterprise and Edu, followed by Plus and Business over subsequent days. That is the announced rollout plan rather than confirmation of availability for an individual account.
For a small team, the practical question remains how well a familiar task is completed. Tool selection, clear requirements and output review work together to make the collaboration useful.
The announcement’s significance is the attempt to move AI from supplying an answer toward completing work. Its value to a user is measured through a result they can understand, use and continue working from, rather than the conversation’s length or the number of visible steps.
