It's official: Google's Gemini will power Siri and Apple's AI
Apple and Google announced a multi-year deal. Gemini models will underpin Apple Foundation Models, and a new Siri arrives this year.

On January 12, Apple and Google issued a joint statement: Apple will use Gemini models and Google's cloud technology for its future AI models.
The statement reads: "After careful evaluation, we determined that Google's technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models."
Key points
- The partnership is multi-year and, per a source, non-exclusive
- No price was disclosed; earlier reports suggested about $1 billion a year
- Apple says its privacy standards remain in place
- A more personalised Siri is coming this year
Who else Apple tried
Apple had tested technology from OpenAI and Anthropic before deciding.
An old relationship
Google paid Apple about $38 billion in 2021 and 2022 to remain the default search engine on iPhone.
Our take
An admission that Apple is behind in AI. For users, if Siri finally gets smarter, that's good news.
