Anthropic accidentally took down thousands of GitHub repos after Claude Code leak
A takedown notice hit about 8,100 repositories, but Anthropic says it was a mistake and retracted most of it.

What happened
The source code of Claude Code was accidentally included in a recent release, which was discovered on March 31.
Anthropic then sent GitHub a takedown notice under US copyright law (DMCA).
The problem
- GitHub records show the notice was executed against about 8,100 repositories.
- That included legitimate forks of Anthropic's public Claude Code repository.
Anthropic's response
Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, said the move was accidental. Most notices were retracted, limiting the takedown to one repository and 96 forks.
An Anthropic spokesperson said "the takedown reached more repositories than intended." GitHub restored access to the affected forks.
