# US imposes 25% tariff on Nvidia H200 chips headed to China

On January 14, US President **Donald Trump** signed a proclamation imposing a **25%** tariff on advanced AI chips made outside the US that pass through the country before being exported elsewhere, including to China.

- **Nvidia H200**
- **AMD MI325X**

The proclamation formalises the Commerce Department's December decision to let Nvidia sell H200 chips to vetted Chinese customers.

## Who is exempt

Chips imported into the US and used there for research, defence or commercial purposes are not taxed.

## Reactions

Nvidia said the move "strikes a thoughtful balance that is great for America". According to Nikkei Asia, China is drafting its own rules for H200 purchases.

The proclamation says the US fully manufactures only about **10%** of the chips it needs.
