# Tesla discontinues Autopilot as FSD becomes a $99-a-month subscription

On January 23, **Tesla** discontinued **Autopilot**, which combined **Traffic Aware Cruise Control** and **Autosteer**.

## What changed?

- On new cars, only **Traffic Aware Cruise Control** remains standard
- From **February 14**, **FSD** (Full Self-Driving) will be available only as a **$99-a-month** subscription
- The one-time **$8,000** FSD purchase ends

## Why?

- California's **DMV** had ordered a **30-day** suspension of Tesla's manufacturing and dealer licences over deceptive marketing of the "Autopilot" name
- A judge stayed that ruling for **60 days** so Tesla could drop the Autopilot name
- Only **12%** of Tesla customers had paid for FSD (per CFO Vaibhav Taneja)

## Safety

According to the US road safety regulator **NHTSA**, Autopilot-related crashes numbered in the hundreds, with at least **13** deaths.
