# Samsung’s 400-plus-layer V10 BV-NAND: density is only part of the story

Samsung’s August 5, 2026 FMS announcement introduced V10 BV-NAND with more than 400 layers. The company claims approximately 58% higher density than V9. This August 9 report examines what that figure means for storage, and where a different kind of evidence is needed.

## Density and speed answer different questions

Higher density describes the amount of data that can be accommodated within a given area. The speed of a task on a complete device depends on the path that data takes through the system.

Consequently, a 58% density increase cannot be restated as files copying 58% faster or applications opening 58% sooner. Those would be separate claims requiring direct measurements of a finished product under defined conditions.

Layer count cannot establish a retail price either. Manufacturing details help explain a technical direction. A purchasing decision involves a specific product, market and point in time.

These distinctions are useful whenever a component announcement is turned into a headline about an entire device. The unit being measured needs to remain clear throughout the comparison.

## Evaluate the complete SSD

NAND is part of a storage system, rather than the whole device a consumer purchases. Assessing a memory generation and assessing a finished SSD are therefore different levels of evaluation.

The workload also matters. Reading a large file, writing many small files and sustaining activity over time pose different questions. One benchmark can describe a particular situation well without representing every use.

For a meaningful comparison, the reader should look for the exact drive model, the task performed and the conditions of the test. Comparing isolated numbers from unrelated tests can hide more than it explains.

That does not diminish the importance of advances in memory manufacturing. It keeps the conclusion proportional to the evidence: a development in the component should be understood at that level until product-specific information connects it to an end-user result.

## Concepts are a different stage

Samsung also presented zHBM and zNAND-O concept models at the event. Their conceptual status matters. A proposed direction for development does not establish that a finished product is already available to buy.

Likewise, the V10 introduction alone does not specify a consumer SSD’s retail price or release date. Those require announcements about identifiable products.

The supported takeaway is a change in NAND architecture and density according to Samsung’s figures. Judging its eventual value for a PC buyer requires the specifications and tests of the finished drive. Keeping those stages separate gives readers a clearer view of progress without turning a manufacturing claim into an unsupported performance promise.
