Samsung announced mass production of PM1763 on July 8, 2026. The enterprise SSD uses PCIe 6.0 and targets AI and high-performance-computing servers. This July 11 report examines the difference between a drive’s specifications and the connection it uses.

## The announced figures

| Detail | According to Samsung |
|---|---|
| Capacities | 4TB, 8TB and 16TB |
| Sequential reads, 16TB model | Up to 28,400MB/s |
| Sequential writes, 16TB model | Up to 21,900MB/s |

These are manufacturer-announced figures. Assessing real use requires a known device, environment and workload. Results specified for one capacity should not automatically be applied to every other capacity.

“Up to” also describes the nature of the published value: an announced maximum for a particular measurement, rather than a constant result for every storage operation.

## PCIe and NVMe have different roles

PCI-SIG describes PCIe 6.0 as a higher-bandwidth I/O connection that maintains compatibility with previous generations. That concerns the communication link.

NVM Express explains that NVMe defines how host software communicates with non-volatile storage. Separating the names helps interpret specifications: one concerns the connection, while the other organises communication with storage.

A theoretical interface figure therefore should not be read directly as an observed file-copy speed. Useful comparisons need measurements of the same work in an identified system.

## What should an AI-server team measure?

An application might load a large file at startup and then make frequent smaller reads. Those stages raise different questions: how long does the transfer take, and how long does each small request wait for its data?

A useful evaluation can record total task-startup time alongside time spent waiting for storage. If another component limits the process, an SSD read figure alone will not explain the outcome.

That distinction also helps when comparing investments in one system. A team first needs to identify where time is being spent, then connect storage measurements to the application’s result. A specification becomes part of the performance explanation rather than a substitute for measuring it.

The significance of the announcement is a specific product entering mass production with published specifications. Choosing it for a particular task involves those figures, compatibility and actual workload results together. That places PM1763 within the server as a whole, alongside the other components involved in completing the work.
