# ESET: Russian government hackers were behind the attack on Poland's power grid

On January 23, security firm **ESET** said the hacking group **Sandworm**, linked to Russia's military intelligence (**GRU**), was behind a cyberattack on **Poland**'s energy sector, with "medium confidence".

## What happened?

- The attack took place on **December 29–30**
- Targets: **two heat and power plants** and communication links to renewable energy sources
- A wiper malware called **DynoWiper** was used

## How serious was it?

- Energy Minister **Motyka** called it the "strongest attack" on Poland's energy infrastructure in years
- Local media reported that at least **half a million homes** could have lost heat and power
- Prime Minister **Tusk** said "at no point was critical infrastructure threatened"

## Who is Sandworm?

Sandworm is already known for attacks on Ukraine's power grid.
