# Pentagon officially labels Anthropic a supply-chain risk

## What happened?

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Department of Defense formally notified Anthropic's leadership that the company and its products have been designated a supply-chain risk.

The label is usually reserved for companies from adversary nations. Anthropic is the first American company to receive it.

## What does it mean?

Any company or agency working with the Pentagon must certify that it does not use Anthropic's models.

## How did it start?

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to let the military use Claude for two things:

- Mass surveillance of Americans.
- Fully autonomous weapons.

According to Bloomberg, Claude is a key tool in Palantir's Maven Smart System. OpenAI signed its own Pentagon deal allowing use for "all lawful purposes."

Amodei called the Pentagon's actions "retaliatory and punitive."
