OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra on September 3, describing improvements in computer use, software engineering and professional work. Its launch page presents creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and carrying out multistep workflows, as examples. Those are the company's descriptions of the model, rather than findings from an independent test we conducted.

## Who can access it at launch?

The official release notes dated September 3 say access is rolling out to a limited set of organizations and that Astra is not yet generally available. The launch page describes plans to broaden access over the following days. Announcing the model therefore does not mean every account received it on the announcement date.

The release notes also describe additional monitoring that may pause or stop a conversation for review when an agent appears to have interpreted instructions incorrectly. That belongs to the announced operating experience; it is not a guarantee that every mistake will be detected automatically.

## What does Critical mean?

OpenAI describes Astra as its first model to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework. That is a capability classification within the company's framework, rather than an announcement of an attack against users.

The safety overview reports improvements in behavior and safeguards alongside limitations in monitorability under adversarial testing. In our assessment, the improvements and their limits need to be read together. A better result in an evaluation does not establish that a model is error-free or will complete every real task correctly.

## Value appears in the delivered result

Consider a team asking for a report based on its files. Our suggested evaluation begins by defining the required sources, the files that may be changed, and what an acceptable deliverable looks like. That connects the assessment to inspectable work rather than an open-ended instruction to “do the task.”

It also helps to separate information quality from presentation quality. A document can look finished while still requiring factual review. Conversely, accurate content may arrive in a file that does not meet the delivery requirements. These are different criteria, and one should not hide the other.

For longer assignments, retaining the original requirements and checking the final output also matter. The measure is not simply whether a model begins the work, but whether it produces a result matching the request. This is an evaluation method we propose, not a hands-on Astra test.

The September 3 announcement marks the beginning of a limited rollout. Assessing suitability for a particular team or task will require evidence from use, while keeping future expansion plans separate from the access conditions on launch day.
