# Microsoft 365 outage takes down Outlook, Teams and OneDrive for many users

On January 22, **Microsoft 365** suffered a major outage, and many users could not access their email and files.

## What stopped working?

- **Exchange Online** (Outlook email)
- File search in **SharePoint** and **OneDrive**
- **Teams** chats and meetings
- Admins also lost access to **Purview**, **Defender XDR** and the admin centers

## What Microsoft said

Microsoft said on X that the problem came from "a portion of service infrastructure in **North America** that is not processing traffic as expected", adding that it was "working to restore the infrastructure to a healthy state".

## The lesson

The outage shows how many companies rely entirely on a single cloud. It's a good idea to keep a **local copy** of important files.
