# Intel revenue rises 25%: understanding the large GAAP loss in its Q2 results

> Intel reported $16.1 billion in second-quarter revenue alongside a substantial GAAP net loss. The breakdown shows why operating performance, fair-value adjustments and adjusted earnings need to be read together.

Intel’s second-quarter results, announced on July 23, 2026, contain two figures worth reading together: revenue increased 25%, while the GAAP net loss attributable to Intel was approximately $11 billion. The quarter ended June 27.

## What does each line measure?

| Measure | Q2 2026 |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $16.1 billion |
| Year-over-year revenue growth | 25% |
| GAAP operating income | Approximately $1.8 billion |
| GAAP net loss attributable to Intel | Approximately $11.0 billion |
| Non-GAAP net income attributable to Intel | Approximately $2.2 billion |

Revenue measures sales. Operating income and the net result represent different stages in calculating performance. Each number therefore needs its own label when being compared.

A useful first question when reading an earnings headline is whether it refers to revenue, profit or cash flow. Identifying the measure makes a comparison with the previous year more informative.

The reporting period matters too. A single quarter and the first six months answer different questions, even when their figures appear beside each other in the same filing.

## A major fair-value adjustment

Intel’s quarterly filing explains that changes in the fair value of Escrowed Shares associated with its US government agreement produced an approximately $12.5 billion accounting loss during the quarter.

That item helps explain how operating income and a net loss can appear in the same report. Following the difference requires looking at the entries between those stages of the calculation.

The word “loss” becomes more informative when its position in the statements is specified. A useful reading connects the number with the line that produced it, then considers its relationship with the rest of the report.

## Following GAAP and non-GAAP step by step

Intel publishes a reconciliation connecting GAAP and non-GAAP results. It identifies accounting adjustments and other items that separate the two measures.

A reader can start with the GAAP figure, examine the name and amount of each adjustment, and then reach the non-GAAP result. This makes the movement between the figures visible instead of leaving two disconnected totals.

When comparing quarters, using the same measure and period provides a consistent starting point. Reviewing the significant items in each period then helps distinguish changes in sales from changes in the net result.

For technology readers, these results illustrate the different perspectives used to describe a chip company’s performance. The measure’s name and calculation are part of the news itself, helping explain figures that can look contradictory in a headline.
