# Indonesia conditionally lifts its ban on Grok

On February 1, **Indonesia** "conditionally" lifted its ban on **xAI**'s **Grok** chatbot.

## What are the conditions?

Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs official **Alexander Sabar** said the ban could be reinstated if **"further violations are discovered"**. The decision followed commitments from X to comply with the law.

## Why was it banned?

- According to analyses by the **New York Times** and **CCDH**, Grok was used to create at least **1.8 million** sexualized images of women in late December and January
- **Malaysia** and the **Philippines** lifted their bans on January 23
- California Attorney General **Rob Bonta** sent xAI a cease-and-desist letter

## Why it matters

The case shows how seriously countries are now treating AI-generated abusive imagery.
