## A temporary examination-related restriction
India restricted Telegram until June 22, 2026, citing concerns about fraud connected to the NEET medical entrance examination. This report describes the restrictions at that time; it does not imply that the ban continued beyond that date.

## Downloads increased
According to the figures cited in the original report, daily VPN app downloads in India rose about 49%, from roughly 139,000 to 208,000. Proton VPN downloads on Apple's App Store increased 113%.

Messaging alternatives also attracted attention. Signal downloads on Google Play rose 322%, while Viber downloads on the App Store increased 216%.

These figures describe particular stores and measurement periods. They are not increases in total active users and do not establish that everyone downloading an alternative permanently stopped using Telegram.

## Telegram's response
Telegram said the decision affected more than 150 million users in India. The original report also cited the Delhi High Court's support for the decision and Surfshark's tracking of Telegram restrictions elsewhere.

## Why the distinction matters
The episode shows how access restrictions can quickly change download behaviour. A short-term jump in app installations, however, should be kept separate from evidence of a lasting shift in the messaging market.
