Google began rolling out its September 2026 spam update at 09:15 US/Pacific time on 24 September. The company’s Search Status Dashboard said the change applied globally and to all languages, and that the rollout could take up to two weeks.

This was an update to Google Search’s ranking and spam-detection systems, not a visible new button or search-page feature. Its purpose was to improve how the systems identify content and techniques that conflict with Google’s published spam policies.

## What was known on launch day?

The official entry established three points: the update started on 24 September, it applied worldwide and across all languages, and deployment might take two weeks. Its completion date was not known on that historical day, so a later outcome should not be treated as information available at launch.

Rankings and search traffic can move during a rollout. A decline for one page does not by itself prove that a site received a penalty or that this update was the only cause. Competitor changes, seasonality, indexing problems and shifting search demand can produce similar patterns.

## What should site owners check?

A sensible first step is to compare Google Search Console data before and during the rollout. Queries, pages, countries and devices should be separated rather than blended into one total. Clicks, impressions and average position can all provide clues, but large reactive changes during a volatile rollout may make the real cause harder to identify.

Google’s guidance is to review its spam policies rather than look for a single quick fix. Risky patterns include publishing large numbers of pages with little original value, generating content mainly to capture search terms, manipulating links, or placing third-party material on a trusted domain primarily to exploit that domain’s reputation.

There is no short checklist that guarantees recovery after changing one element. Technical problems, content quality and policy compliance need to be assessed separately.

## What does this mean for Kurdish and Arabic sites?

Because Google said the update covered every language, Kurdish and Arabic content was not excluded. Publishers should prioritise original and useful reporting, accurate titles, clear sources and pages made for readers rather than ranking manipulation. The size of a language’s online ecosystem does not by itself establish whether an individual page is high or low quality.

Impact should be evaluated over days and weeks, with technical and editorial changes recorded so they can be compared against search data. On 24 September, the update was only beginning its rollout; its final effects were not yet known.
