# Anthropic accidentally took down thousands of GitHub repos after Claude Code leak

## What happened
The source code of **Claude Code** was accidentally included in a recent release, which was discovered on March 31.

Anthropic then sent GitHub a takedown notice under US copyright law (DMCA).

## The problem
- GitHub records show the notice was executed against about **8,100 repositories**.
- That included legitimate forks of Anthropic's public Claude Code repository.

## Anthropic's response
Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, said the move was accidental. Most notices were retracted, limiting the takedown to **one repository and 96 forks**.

An Anthropic spokesperson said "the takedown reached more repositories than intended." GitHub restored access to the affected forks.
